John December 11, 2016 Reply Thanks! When I came back in this morning and turned it back on, it took forever to get to a working screen, as it said it was reverting updates. I know eventually I'll have to upgrade as Windows won't support 7 anymore, but until then I want to enjoy this new laptop & of course want it to have the Joe Nechanicky December 27, 2016 Reply I just installed W7 pro on a computer; this is second install this week.

Given that there won't be patches for Vista in the very near future, I would really recommend upgrading to a newer version of Windows as soon as possible. I have looked into the problem. It's working now. I've an HP laptop that wouldn't shut down since Windows 8 came out, talked w/hp, took to the tech place, no luck.

GC December 16, 2016 Reply You my friend are a "frigg'n" genius and Microsoft should take lessons from you! It stopped working properly so I replaced it with a SSD (solid state drive) and now I have no startup or shutdown issues or slowness either. As you have now completely removed the old SoftwareDistribution database, when you next run Windows Updates, it will not know that it has been run before and may through an error. The menu that opens should show you if any updates need to be installed, and if they do, clicking Install updates will get the process moving.
