My recommendation: Don't try other approaches; just install the factory image again and follow the sequence of steps PRECISELY. I am running win7 home premium 64 bit Andy D. Win7 has known issues now that the update catalogue is so huge (the above fix is supposed to help address that). I hope this helps others.
Windows 7 Update Checking For Updates Forever
It shouldn't be this much work to use an operating system. Then, I reboot and run the MS update tool which should return all "fix" in its columns. I don't really have a plan to make one. It's probably been over a year since I even tried to checked for updates, perhaps two since I succeeded.
- Update: Microsoft has released a huge update rollup for Windows 7 SP1, this is similar to a service pack but they are not calling it that.

- So you should be okay to use them with your computer.
- Note: Be sure to set your power settings to make sure the system doesn't go into sleep mode.
- Wasted a day and a half letting it search on its own.
- I cannot believe this is legal.

Now install the SUR Tool package, this is a big package and will install many updates along with cleaning up and repairing the Windows update store. I uninstalled some craps coming with the notebook and installed some basic purpose software like 7zip, VLC, an antivirus, etc. (all free software from secure sites or paid versions not cracked Microsoft certainly was no help. Is alcohol called spirits due to linking of imagery? After following these steps to the letter, I am back in business.
I have updated win7 to win10 until July 29th, 2016. Microsoft hasn't updated their web page at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/949104 in over 2 years and still show the latest version as 7.6.7600.256.
