If the bottom mic were bad or dead then I'd assume I couldn't talk on the phone, but that still works. We were also able to hear sound taking the card out and playing through the computer. It's not free, but then neither is the audio cable solution. It would show that the parts are hitting and there are levels but there was no sound.

In this case you can use an adaptor that doubles the headphones out, or enable Transport > Software Playthrough (on/off) in Audacity to listen as you record.
