Hot-plug External Drive = Forcibly Dismounts Internal Drive. Why?
It's certainly possible in principle for software to stop the drive spinning - power management does exactly that - and the unmount/remount thing can also be done in software. No need to spin down? It's simple enough, but sadly none of the OMV plug-ins quite delivers the same functionality. So I want to hotplug it, make my backups of some shares and unplug it again. If you try to access files stored on the drive, Windows Explorer becomes unresponsive for 1-2 minutes. Thank you for helping us maintain CNET's great community. It was driving me nuts.
Turn Off Hard Drive
Sometimes I geta message, cannot shutdown because it is still in use. Couldn't find the VID/PID info under Hardware IDs but under 'Parent' or 'Last known parent' entries. It worked for my Toshiba so I was hoping it would for my Seagate as well, but no such luck. It is connected to USB 3.0.
Now the drive becomes disconnected completely & won't reconnect back if it is not used after a few minutes. Sometimes the program that was accessing the USB device needs to be closed. Unfortunately, I don't know a way in linux to find out whether the OS thinks the disk is hot-pluggable or not. If I get anywhere with that, I'll report back! It would be pretty cool if they had a way to deal with this situation. Download the ToggleSuspend.ps1 to a local directory.
